New Moon

This photo was taken by twilightportugal.com

New Moon is another movie from the Twilight saga that continues the fascinating love story between humans, vampires, and werewolves. In this new movie Bella Swan is now turning 18 and she's surprised by a party prepared by her boyfriend Edward Cullen and all other vampires that belong to his family. Accidentally, Bella cuts her finger and a little of blood comes out, but its enough to make the vampires follow their instinct and want to drink all her blood. After this happens, Edward realizes how much danger he's putting her through by letting her stay with them, so he decides to leave the city with his family. He knows Bella is very stubborn and wont let him go easily, so he tells her he doesn't love her anymore, but its not true.
Bella spends months in depression after her love leaves her, and later she starts to get to know Jacob Black better. They become great friends, and this helps her a little to move on with her life. They spend a lot of time together, but one day Jacob starts acting really strange, and then Bella discovers he became a werewolf. Bella is fine with it since she's already used to "monsters" and Edward went away. But werewolves and vampires are enemies, and when the Cullen family comes back it becomes a huge problem.
The worse problem is why the Cullen family came back. Alice, Edward's sister, has visions of the future, and she saw Bella jumping of a cliff and thought she was killing herself. When Edward hears this he decides to kill himself too. Later Alice discovers Bella isn't dead so together with her they run to where Edward is to stop him form committing suicide. I really like this movie, its full of action and drama, but I still prefer the first one. What I'm really liking about the Twilight saga is that they are very faithful to the book. It was really fun to compare how I had imagined the scenes would be like and how they actually were. I think everyone would like this movie, but to watch and understand it you should first watch the first movie if you haven't. I'd recommend it to teenagers, adults, boys, and girls because at the same time its romantic and cute it is also full of action and suspense.

Fame

Fame follows a group of dancers, singers, actors, and artists for four years in New York City High School of Performing Arts. Through many activities, all students from all social levels are given the opportunity to live their dreams and reach the true and long-lasting fame. The movie emphasizes on the idea the fame is only reached by a person with talent, a lot of dedication, and very hard work. In a very competitive place, student's passion are placed in risk. Beyond having to manage their artistic objectives, they also need to deal with normal school problems like absurd amounts of homework and projects, friendships, love, and self-acceptance. While all students fight for their moment of glory, they will discover who among them has the talent and discipline needed to be successful. Its an enjoyable movie, but nothing exceptional. The only thing I really liked were the songs and that it shows that sometime dreams can be so faraway and almost impossible to reach, but if you are determined, ready to confront competition you might get there. It also shows that the path you take to reach your dream is something you'll never forget.

Law Abiding Citizen

Clyde is a dedicated family father that is a witness of his wife's and daughter's death. One of the culprits is freed only 5 years after the crime due to an agreement made with an ambitious promoter called Nick. Some years later the assassin is found dead and Clyde is arrested because of that without evidence against him. Now his only goal is to denounce the corrupt judicial system, even if he has to kill everybody involved, one by one. The problem is, Clyde is already in jail... "Law Abiding Citizen" is a very interesting movie because is shows that not always there is justice for horrible crimes, especially when the justice system is corrupt. Also its a little shocking watching the only person who is seeking justice being seen as the culprit. Throughout the scenes I felt like I was in Clyde's place because I imagined how much anger and frustration he would be feeling. It is really hard to loose those you love, especially two at once, but it must be even harder if you end up watching it like he did. I really liked the movie because its different from many others I've seen, only the end that was a little predictable.

Surrogates

In the movie "Surrogates" the FBI agents, Greer and Peters, investigate the mysterious death of an university student. This murder is somehow related to the man that helped create robots that replace humans, a phenomenon that allows people to buy perfect robotic versions of themselves. These machines are initially controlled but later end up assuming people's life, humans stay in the comfort and security of their homes while the robots live their lives. However the robots are really similar to human beings, so now this investigation has not only to find out who is responsible for the crime, but also who in the world is real, and in who can they trust. Its a very intriguing movie because its a way the directors found of questioning values and conditions of the world in which we live. Its based on a very original script and humans sending robots to live their lives in my opinion is a symbolism for the fear we have of violence, competition, and life in general. Its a good movie for those who like science fiction.

A Christmas Carol

Christmas is coming and,
like always,
Ebenezer Scrooge continues with his disdain towards this so celebrated date. He's very rich, stingy, and only thinks about money, consequently not allowing himself to have some emotion/feeling in his heart. Therefore he makes fun and abuses of those who enjoy Christmas, like Bob Cratchit his assistant and also ignores his nephew Fred. When his business partner dies Ebenezer is visited by 3 Christmas ghosts: from the past, present, and future. Each one takes the old and grumpy man in a "trip" that will help him reflect better about his passed life and choose what he'll do with his future.  "A Christmas Carol" is based on a Charles Dickens' book and its very faithful to it, all the events in the book are shown in the movie. Many people already know this story so I thought it was really interesting that they made a movie about it. I also liked that even though it might be considered a children theme, the movie was made in a way that I don't consider childish. I really liked it and would recommend to people of all ages.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

"Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" is a movie about a scientist who wants to end with hunger problems in the world. For the small population of Chewandswallow, everything seems to be working out, but one day food starts falling from the sky. Just like all other children stories, it explores the plot in which the main character is excluded from society because of a lack of talent and later is seen as a hero since they discover he/she is special due to an unique skill. In this movie Flint is the excluded character because his inventions always go wrong. To make things worse, he lives in a minuscule island where the population only eats fish and his father wants him to give up on his creations and inventions to come work with him. He starts feeling depressed while selling fish, and decides to try his last invention, a machine that transforms water into food, but obviously something is going wrong. The only thing that makes the movie little interesting is that its 3D and its animation, its very well done.

Even though the story is very predictable, its not all bad since its suitable for its audience. I wouldn't recommend it for adults or teenagers, but children between the ages of 3-10 probably would like it, specially because its 3D.

The Rebound

After a tough divorce, Sandy, a 40-year-old woman with 2 kids, decides to restart her life in New York. When she hires Aram, a 25-year-old man to be the nanny of her children Frank and Sadie, her life goes through another overturn because Aram seems to be everything Sandy needs, he is full of news/interesting and makes her feel younger, prettier, and more valorized. From there many confusions begin when she actually tries to have a relationship with the much younger man and take care of the 2 kids at the same time. I really liked this movie since its truly in tune with things that happen today and it goes against some “labels” and stereotypes. Catherine Zeta-Jones did great, I believe this is one of her best performances. Also because of his goofy but cute personality, Justin Bartha was perfect for his role. The movie is just like any other romantic comedy, but the great acting took it to a next level. The only thing I would change is the ending because I think more could have been done with it.

Let the Right One In

Oskar is a 12 year-old boy that is bullied in school. One day he meets this girl who is pale white and really different. She teaches him how to fight back those who are bullying him and they become really friends. Then he discovers Eli, the girl he met, is a vampire and he has to decide whether to continue being her friend or not. But this isn’t a simple choice, because knowing you’re best friend has to kill others every night to survive is very scary. Eli is also facing difficult times since she leaves with Håkan, an older man that gets paid to get blood for her every night, but he almost always is insisting for them to be physically intimate. Its a good movie, but unrealistic, obviously. It shows how hard it can be for some people in school and what a problem bullying really is. Although the movie is pretty sad its also very scary, but it’s a good movie for people who like tragic stories but mixed with terror.

My Sister's Keeper

Anna Fitzgerald's parents only want her because she's needed to save their other child's life. She was conceived by vitro fertilization with the purpose of being a genetic match for her older sister. After some years she realizes what is happening so she goes to a lawyer to be medically emancipated, meaning she wants to have rights over her own body. She doesn't want her parents to use her anymore, she wants to have other purposes in life other than just give blood to her sister. Her parents get really mad at her decision, claiming they love her, but they don't understand that Anna doesn't want to kill her sister, she just wants to have a normal life. This drama based on a book by Jodi Picoult, is very tragic and sad, but its a really good movie because it shows how hard it can be for a child to not feel loved by their parents. This decision Anna has to make is really hard and its interesting to see how people think when it comes to really important decisions.

The Ugly Truth

The Ugly Truth is a movie about the battle between women and men. Abby Richter is the producer of a morning program, considered a workaholic. Like many women, she spends her whole life searching for the perfect guy, but this obsession generates many emotional problems causing her to be single forever. Things begin to change when her boss chooses her to work with Mike Chadway, a TV actor whose motto is to tell everybody "the ugly truth" about women and men. Chadway is a charming men, and through hilarious "tests" he tries to prove to Abby his theories, leading to a very unexpected ending. I watched this movie last weekend and I loved it. Its very funny and makes jokes about daily subjects, so I recommend it, nobody should miss this wonderful movie.

Some friends travel to Las Vegas 2 days before the wedding of one of them, and after drinking a lot they wake up the next day and the groom is missing. While trying to find him they discover their situation is worse than they thought. It's a hilarious movie, that makes you laugh from the beginning to the end. Full of sincere jokes and situations that can actually happen, it can easily be considered the best comedy movie of the year.

The Accidental Husband

A talk radio host named Emma Lloyd tells one of her listeners to break up with her boyfriend and when the boyfriend, which becomes ex-boyfriend finds out he seeks revenge. The movie starts being hilarious but later becomes a little boring. Many things happen, but they make no sense sometimes. It gives the impression that it’ll never end.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

This photo was taken by scene-stealers.com

The Harry Potter saga finally releases their 6th movie, with high expectancy. Like everybody, I waited anxiously to watch it, but I was disappointed. After 5 exceptional movies, the 6th leaves you wanting a little more. It's very intense and dark, but with few action scenes and for those who didn't read the book it might have been hard to understand, but at the same time, those who read it, say it was horrible. The movie lasts about 2 and a half long hours, with the three main characters only bumping into problems, not making sense anymore. I hope their 7th and last movie is better.
